Features of a Dual Fuel Range

Over the last several years, ranges with gas cooktops have become increasingly popular as consumers have become more comfortable using them. Electric cooktops have a tendency to take longer to heat up and cool down. Gas is also know to provide more even heating oven the entire service of the pot or pan which reduces burning.

Gas is plentiful and and extremely efficient fuel source, not to mention much cheaper than electricity. Electric cooktops heat up by means of resistance which is inherently less efficient because it takes more effort to switch electricity into heat.

Dual fuel ranges have electric ovens

Dual fuel ranges combine the best of both worlds. Electric ovens heat more evenly and can get hotter which can be a benefit when baking breads.

While electric heat is a benefit for baking the gas is ideal for stovetop cooking. Dual fuel ranges are becoming more popular but it does require the extra service to be installed prior to installation if your home did not come with both.

What will I need in my home?

If you currently have a gas range then you will need to have power ran for the electric portion of the range. It's best to contact a local electrician to get an estimate prior to ordering the appliance to make sure it's not cost prohibitive. You'll need a new dedicated line that provides 220V and a 30 AMP breaker. While you may save money due to efficiency you don't want to throw that away with the extra costs for updating your electrical.

If you currently have an electric range then you will need to have a gas line ran. It's recommended to contact a licensed plumber to get an estimate. Typically it's going to be cheaper to run a gas line provided they have easy access to the back of the range.

In summary dual fuel ranges open up a lot of possibilities and more and more manufacturers are providing them as an option.
